The Eiffel Tower is a 984-foot symbol in the capital city of Paris, France. It was built between 1887 and 1889 by designer, engineer Gustave Eiffel. It was erected as a central identifying feature of the Paris Exposition of 1889. It has three levels. Stairs are available to reach the first two levels. However, visitors must take an elevator to reach the third level. The highest level reaches a height equal to that of a 90-story skyscraper. The Eiffel Tower's metal structure, consisting of steel and iron, weighs 7,300 tons. The total weight is 10,100 tons. The model is length 24", width 24", height 66". Photographs and descriptions of models were included in the book "Models for the Blind," compiled by workers of the Ohio Writers' Program. The book was meant as a guide, to be used in the building and study of models, and as documentation of the achievements at the Ohio State School for the Blind. The models were a result of research, design and construction by employees of the Works Projects Administration. Models were made of durable materials to withstand regular usage. Description: 1955 calendar advertising and themed around Ohio author and conservation advocate Louis Bromfield's famed Malabar Farm in Lucas, Ohio. The full-color twelve-month calendar includes color photographs by Joe Munroe and short caption essays by Louis Bromfield. Calendar verso pages feature longer essays on the history and rehabilitation of Malabar and vignettes of farm life also written by Bromfield. The Friends of the Land Collection (1930-1960) contains the papers of the Friends of the Land (1940-1959), a prominent national soil conservation education organization headquartered in Columbus, Ohio. FOTL produced an international literary arts quarterly, THE LAND (edited by New Deal agriculture writer Russell Lord) in addition to several members' only publications (LAND LETTER) and informational pamphlets. They also hosted annual conferences; ran conservation tours, teacher training labs, and workshops; and operated as a national clearinghouse for conservation information. Ohio farmer and novelist Louis Bromfield was active in the organization. Much of the collection reflects the career and interests of FOTL Executive Secretary Ollie Fink, who was a prominent conservation education pioneer in Ohio. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: John Purcell was a prominent leader in the Roman Catholic Church in Ohio during the nineteenth century. Born in Ireland on February 26, 1800, Purcell immigrated to the United States in 1818, then studied to become a Catholic priest in Paris, France. In 1833, he became bishop of the diocese in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he oversaw St. Xavier College, now known as Xavier University, and established various educational programs for children in hospitals and orphanages. Description: Handwritten on reverse: "Monument at Washington D.C." The Washington Monument is an obelisk near the west end of the National Mall in Washington, D.C., built to commemorate the first U.S. president, General George Washington. The monument, made of marble, granite, and sandstone, is both the world's tallest stone structure and the world's tallest obelisk, standing 555 feet 5⅛ inches. There are taller monumental columns, but they are neither all stone nor true obelisks. It is also the tallest structure in Washington D.C.. It was designed by Robert Mills, an architect of the 1840s. The actual construction of the monument began in 1848 but was not completed until 1884, almost 30 years after the architect's death. The cornerstone was laid on July 4, 1848; the capstone was set on December 6, 1884, and the completed monument was dedicated on February 21, 1885. It officially opened October 9, 1888. Upon completion, it became the world's tallest structure, a title previously held by the Cologne Cathedral. Description: Reverse reads: "Thompson Estate - 'Laurel Court'. College Hill, near Cincinnati, Ohio. 'Laurel Court' built of white marble is an exact reproduction of the 'Trianon' in Paris, France." Located at 5870 Belmont Avenue in the College Hill area of Cincinnati, Ohio, the Peter G. Thomson Home is better known as Laurel Court and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. The Beau Arts Neoclassical style home, completed in 1907, was built for Peter G. Thomson, founder of Champion Paper, and designed by James Gamble Rogers, the nephew of Peter's wife Laura Gamble Thomson. It was modeled after the Petit Trianon, a "small" chateau on the grounds of the Palace of Versailles in France, and is considered one of the finest homes in America. The exterior is made from chiseled granite and was originally built on twenty three acres, on the highest point in Hamilton County. The Thomson family lived in the home until 1947. Today, the private residence stands on seven and a half acres of land, and the numerous original buildings, gardens, statues and fountains are open for tours and special events by reservation only. Some of the notable features of this home include the retractable roof of the two story Atrium in the center of the house, the Rookwood tiled swimming pool, the African Rosewood tiled Library, and the gilded Music Room. This is actually St Mary's Cathedral, also known as Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption, which is located in Covington, Kentucky. Construction of this Roman Catholic church began in 1894, but was stopped in 1915 and remains unfinished. The exterior was inspired by Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, including the sinister gargoyles, and the interior after Saint Denis in France.
